Can you tell us a bit about your background - is this your first role within the construction industry or have you worked in the industry for a number of years?

"I joined Kirkwood Homes back in 2010 and spent 3 years there. Moving to Kirkwood Timber Frame not only offered me new challenges and opportunities to learn but also allowed me to bring my experience to a new setting."

What does a day in the life at Kirkwood Timber Frame look like for you?

“In a nutshell, my role involves managing the purchase ledger, handling invoices, and ensuring everything is ready for payment processing. I work closely with Hannah, our Finance Manager, to learn more about our broader financial operations.

"With the similarity of accounting roles across sectors, it's worth considering how easily your finance experience could transition into the construction industry."

What do you feel is the biggest challenge of being a woman in construction?

"While it's true that the construction industry remains largely male-dominated, I've found it to be very inclusive and supportive in my experience at both Kirkwood Homes and Kirkwood Timber Frame. People, regardless of gender, are incredibly approachable and supportive, readily offering advice and assistance - especially with the more technical matters! As someone from a finance background, I often have queries in other areas, and I'm grateful for the wealth of knowledge shared by experienced individuals."

How do you see the timber frame industry changing over the next five years?

"Net zero and sustainable housing are the talk of the town in the timber frame industry. While some people may only see the finished product, the manufacturing process is always changing to meet sustainability goals. Looking ahead, it's exciting to think about where this will lead over the next five years."

What advice would you give to other women looking to get into the construction industry?

“If it's something you are interested in, go for it. Don't let anything hold you back. I've always had positive experiences with working in the construction industry. It doesn’t matter whether you are male or female, the opportunities available across the sector present a career for life.

"During my time at Kirkwood Homes and Kirkwood Timber Frame, I've witnessed more and more females joining us, which is really encouraging. While we aim for continued progress, I think that it is important to acknowledge the strides made over the past decade."

What do you love most about the industry? Anything you’d like to see change in the future?

‘’Witnessing the finished builds is always a highlight for me, it’s great to see everything come together. I also enjoy being part of a forward-thinking company that prioritises environmental responsibility.
